lights and shelves. last day of carpentry work!
Yesterday, Brian and I finished the last of the woodwork. The message board (to the far right) is up!
UPDATES: I have ordered all the metals:
-3/8” aluminum platesfor the water-jet cut sign that I will fabricate
-30, 3/8” stainless steel pins to attach the two plies of the sign together
-stainless steel rods of varying lengths for the art mounting system that...
Day Four of Install: Timelapse
Sign Options! What do you think?
Below are some options for Div III signs. One element in our initial sketches and models that many students, faculty, and staff reacted positively too was signage that set this corner apart and identified it as a unique space. I have laid out a few different options, all of which are anatomically similar. They are composed of three layers: the face is 1/4” aluminum (interfacing nicely with...
Time lapse of installation!
3/20/11 INSTALLATION DAY 21: Banners
Div III Students: Now that the Showcase is nearly built, it needs to be filled with Div III joy. Share work in progress or finished worked in many different media (images, text, artists books, video…). Digitally, you can submit slides and film shorts to div3showcase@gmail.com. (Video will be silent in the showcase until we create a head phone system. For a physical space, email that same...
3/18/11 INSTALLATION DAY 19
Over night I wired up this assembled side of the showcase so that we could jump into assembly of the other side the next morning.
Guillo tested out a shelf. Moment of truth…
Julie continued to wire up lights, here in the top frame piece.
Guillo and I wired up the base cubbies.
To allow passage of the wire to the light on the column (for the message board), Brian drilled a...
3/17/11 WRITING ON THE BACK: DEAR HAMPSHIRE...
The whole showcase was assembled and up for a few days before it was pushed into the corner and mounted. Many people wrote messages to “Hampshire Future!”. Thanks Guillermo for photos.
3/17/11 INSTALLATION DAY 18, good-bye shop:hello...
What a joyous day! By the time we had arrived at the shop, Brian had picked up the big box truck for the Showcase.
Since all the pieces were ready, we carefully began to load the truck starting first with the slim back panel pieces.
Once the panels were loaded it got a bit more complicated as we brought in the zig-zags. Since all the bends are right angles, they sat together quite...
3/16/11 FABRICATION DAY 17, looking pretty damn...
Day 17 Fabrication Team: Julie, Guillermo, Arielle, Brian, and Mike
We continued to sand pieces as Brian clear coated others. Brian did all the spraying and we helped bring the large pieces in and out of the spray room.
This is one of the bottom storage units.
We hand-sanded the doors for the bottom storage unit (after they had been sealed).
The shelves are looking shiny!

3/15/11 FABRICATION DAY 16: sanding and sanding
Day 16 Fabrication Team: Julie, Guillermo, Zach, Brian, and Mike
Today we sanded, a bunch! Many of the components were ready to be handed sanded after they had been sealed.
The untreated pieces still needed the initial electric sanding. We disassembled the unit piece by piece and sanded everything.
This is one of the two shelves for the corner under the table. The smaller piece of...
Blank Slate!
Tomorrow it will be transformed.
3/14/11 Fabrication Day 15: Sanding!
Day 15 Fabrication Team: Lucas, Lucas, Guillermo, Brian, and Mike
After de-clamping the shelves we had assembled the previous today, we sanded down all the edges so that the joints can be perfectly flush. We used an electric sander for the face and then a sanding block to break down the sharp edges, so that they feel smooth to the touch.
This cross-section shows the components of the...
3/10/11 FABRICATION DAY 14: Shelves!
Day 14 Fabrication Team: Mike and Brian
We installed a few of the lights and buttons to see how tightly they fit.
Most of the evening was spent fabricating the shelves. All components were cut roughly 1” longer and assembled long (nosing and tablet). The components were glued then clamped together. After they had dried, they were cut down to the appropriate size.
This shows all...
3/9/11 FABRICATION DAY 13: lights!
Day 13 Fab team: Sarah, Mike and Brian
We spent the drilling the holes for the lights and switches.
With the drill holes you can get an idea of how great it is going to look with the lights.
Brian drilled holes through the back-panels into the partitions. The wires for each light come out through the back panel. They will then travel down into the base and into the transformers.
We...
3/8/11 FABRICATION DAY 12
Day 12 Fabrication Team: Bexx, Brian, and Mike
The shipment of LED lights and transformers arrived!
Bexx and I assembled the end table (where the computer will be).
These elbows will be hidden once the nosing is installed.
Bexx and I marked all the center-points for the drill holes for the switches and lights.
After the glue set, we installed the table.
3/7/11 FABRICATION DAY 11
Day 11 Fabrication Team: Spencer, Hester, Brian, and Mike
We continued to assemble zig-zag partitions, surprise surprise!
Once assembled and declamped, the zig was ready to be united with its corresponding zag. This is one of the many “moments of truth!” where we get to see how accurate we have been.
The shallower 14” partition was installed first. The wider 20”...
3/3/11 FABRICATION DAY 10
Day 10 Fabrication team: Mike and Brian
Brian and I continued to assemble the zig-zag partitions.
This shows the embedded interior elbows and the outer piece of plywood.
Once the interior skeleton is finished, the last ply gets glued in and everything is clamped together.
The zig-zags have taken over the shop.
Once assembled, we brought them to the back of the shop so that they...
3/2/11 FABRICATION DAY 9: ZAG
Day 9 Fab Team: Evan, Brian, and Mike
Wednesday we were ready to unite the first two interlocking zig-zag spans. The interlocking pairs are composed of one 14 inch deep span and one 20 inch deep span. After assembling the spans, the next step was to router out the notches so that the zig-zags could be pushed together. The intersecting components create the necessary structural integrity.
Before...
3/1/11 FABRICATION DAY 8: zig
Day 8 Fab Team: Julie, Bexx, Brian, and Mike
I laid out and drilled most of the holes for the remaining partitions. I developed a little system for keeping everything as level and in-line as possible. All marks are referenced off of the storyboard (the piece that has every possible hole drilled and numbered).
I constantly added and removed drill bits to account for vertical spans without...
2/28/11 FABRICATION DAY 7: Clamps!
Day 7 Crew: Guillermo, Hester, Brian, and Mike
Now that the main frame and back are complete, we have shifted our attention to the diagonal spanning partitions. Guillo, Hester, and Brian assembled the layers while I worked at the drill press, drilling hundreds of holes for the shelves.
This is shows the three layers of the partitions: 1/2” plywood, 1” spacer, 1/2” plywood....
