2/24/11 Fabrication Day 6
Day 6 Fab Team: Bexx, Brian, and me (Mike)!
We met with a representative from Hafele (cabinet accessory company) at the Thayer Street shop to talk about our different lighting options. My goal is to have lighting be as flexible as possible, which makes our 28 light system a bit complex (but not hopelessly so!). There will be one master switch that turns the power on or off. Each light (some in...
2/23/11 Fabrication Day 5: cut, cut, cut!
Weds Fab Team: Hester, Brian, and me (Mike)!
We started off by going through the plans, piece by piece and developing a cut list for all the wood for the diagonal spanning partitions. Hester and I developed a little system for keeping all the cut pieces organized. They are numbered, labelled, and some were later mitered.
Cut list broken down into each vertical span.
Hester and Brian...
2/22/11 Fabrication Day 4
Tues Fab Team: Dan, Brian, and me (Mike)!
Tuesday we started by un-clamping the panels that we had glued together.
The back panels are glued together in pairs. The pairs will be fastened together onsite in the library with tight joints, the nifty contraptions below. We are not gluing all the back panels together in the shop because as one solid whole, it would be too massive to transport and...

Day 3 Fab Team: Spencer, Dan, Brian and Mike!

The gap in the middle of the two plies houses the wires and components for the lighting system. (Thursday we are meeting with a representative from...
2/17/11 Fabrication Day 2
Bexx, Brian, and I were the Thursday crew. We had a very productive session. On Wednesday we finished cutting all the pieces for the base storage area (in white). These long, horizontal cubbies store the extra shelves. Later we will be fabricating and installing the doors for these cubbies that will fold out and down. When closed, the storage cubby disappears entirely.
We began on Thursday by...

project update: meeting with Brian from Thayer...
Yesterday Spencer, Liz and I met with Brian from Thayer Street Associates. We had a very productive meeting in which we examined the Showcase shop drawings that I finished last week. We went through the entire project, piece by piece, noting all of its components and discussing the most logical order for fabrication. The final unit cannot be shipped whole, nor can it fit through the library doors....
