The Story of the Div III Showcase
The completed Showcase in Spring 2011
The idea for a Division III Showcase was included in Rehamping’s original 2010 presentation. We wanted to address the need for a space on campus that celebrated the Div III thesis experience in a way that engaged past, present and future students. The epitome of the Hampshire academic experience, the Div III puts value in collaborative experiences, individualized learning, and interdisciplinarity. In Spring 2010, the only space on campus that portrayed the Div III was a dead corner on the first floor of the library that had stacks of Div IIIs (ie, only written and printed work) that also held empty water jugs occasionally.

Of the 16 spaces our presentation proposed redesigns for, was one for the southwest corner of the first floor of the Library that opened up the corner for cozy studying space while simultaneously presenting the Div III as a valued part of the Hampshire experience. Our hope was to show prospective students how unique the Div III thesis is to Hampshire.

Over Summer 2010, the Library underwent a renovation that included the installation of half-walls equipped with power outlets, new carpet, new signage, and among other things, the opening up of Rehamping’s proposed Div III corner. This paved the way for Rehamping to take one of the most well-received ideas from the Spring 2010 presentation and realize it through a community-engaged redesign process.

Throughout many open Rehamping meetings, all-community meetings, and many one on one meetings with staff, faculty and administration of the college, we formed a proposal that laid out how the project might be completed. In it, we included a revised rendering that took into consideration the displaying of Div III work that are in a form other than a written paper. This multi-media Showcase would have the capability to display studio art, digital media, music, and all everything in between.

After receiving funding from the Council on Community Development students worked intensively with Thayer Street Associates, the same firm that headed the renovation of the Library during Summer 2010. This was a great opportunity for students to get hands on experience in a professional woodworking workshop. In just one year, this corner in the Library went from an idea to reality—from dead corner with water jugs to amazing Div III work. The work in the Showcase rotates out at least once a semester. For Spring 2012 we are curating a display of Div III work by alums who work as staff members of the College. If you’d like to get involved, email firstname.lastname@example.org
